How bonus tax works in Florida
Federal supplemental withholding rules are uniform across all 50 states: employers withhold 22% on bonuses up to $1 million per employee per year, and 37% on any portion above $1 million. This is withholding, not final tax. Your actual federal liability on the bonus is computed on your annual return; if your effective rate is below 22% you receive the difference back as a refund, and if above you owe more.
Florida adds 0% on top. Several states (California, New York, Massachusetts) impose their own supplemental withholding rates on bonuses; Florida does not have a state income tax to apply.
FICA still applies in full: 6.2% Social Security up to the wage base, 1.45% Medicare on every dollar, and 0.9% Additional Medicare on wages above $200,000 single ($250,000 MFJ).
Frequently asked questions
What is the federal bonus tax rate in 2026?+
22% on supplemental wages up to $1 million per year per employee. Anything above $1 million is withheld at 37%. These are withholding rates; final tax is reconciled on your return.
Is bonus pay taxed differently in Florida than regular salary?+
Federal withholding uses the supplemental rate (22%) rather than your normal W-4 calculation, but the final federal tax is the same. Florida applies no state tax in either case.
Can I reduce the tax on a bonus?+
Yes — defer some of the bonus into your 401(k) (up to the annual limit) or HSA. Each pretax dollar reduces both federal withholding and final tax. Florida has no state-side adjustment because there is no state tax.
When do I see the bonus on my paycheck?+
Most US employers process bonuses on a regular pay date or as a separate off-cycle check. Either way, the federal supplemental withholding rules apply identically.
